Why is adequate attic ventilation important for you and your home? It keeps your home cool in the summer, dry in the winter, your utility bill low, and your shingles lasting longer. Keep reading to learn more!

How does Attic Ventilation Work?

Proper attic ventilation allows for a continuous flow of outside air into and out of the attic, creating a cooler attic in the summer and a drier attic in the winter. It balances between air intake and air exhaust (which occur at or near your roof ridge).

Attic Ventilation and Your Shingles

When there is a lack of attic ventilation, the shingles and decking of your roof can get damaged from heat and moisture buildup inside your home. When shingles are damaged, they will not last as long and your home will need a roof replacement sooner, rather than later. Damaged shingles can cause holes in your roof, leading to leaks and potential water damage. With attic ventilation, the surface temperature of the shingles are redacted, leading to shingles that will last longer.

Attic Ventilation and Your Utility Bill

In the summer, heat from the sun warms the roof, which then radiates into the attic. If the attic is not properly ventilated, that heat can radiate into the rest of the home, making things uncomfortably warm.

What do you do when it’s hot in your house? You would typically crank up your A/C, which will then cause a higher utility bill.

With a properly ventilated attic, cool air will stay inside, keeping you cool and your utility bill low.

Attic Ventilation and Winter Weather

Attic ventilation not only keeps your attic cool in the summer, but it keeps it drier in the winter. Without attic ventilation in the winter, moisture in your home will move into your attic and form condensation at the attic’s ceiling, which can cause problems for your home and for your wallet.

Besides attic condensation, winter weather can bring ice dams. In Illinois, where snow and ice are common, this is a real danger to your roof.

Ice dams happen when warm air from inside the home rises to the top of the attic, lower areas of the roof stay cold. After a snowfall, the warmer spots on your roof melt the snow, causing it to flow down the roof until it reaches colder spots. It then refreezes and forms a buildup of ice called an “ice dam.”

Proper attic ventilation creates a “cold roof” - where the roof temperature is the same from the top of the roof to the bottom, helping to eliminate the conditions that lead to ice dams.

Haynes Attic Ventilation

What can Haynes do to Ventilate your Attic?

We use CertainTeed Ridge Vents to give your roof the best weather protection for your roof and superior air ventilation for your attic. An external baffle from the CertainTeed Ridge Vents will deflect wind and weather over the vent and create negative pressure to “pull” air from the attic, leading to increased airflow.

Extra-waterproof underlayments are installed underneath CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster roof shingles, keeping your roof waterproof as excess moisture rises to it.

To properly ventilate your attic, keep your roof from weather damage, and to keep your home comfortable throughout the summer and winter in your Northern Illinois home, contact Haynes Construction for a roof replacement with CertainTeed Ridge Vents.
